Playing Sidalicia: the Game

Combatting a Lion

Overview:

The intent of this game is to allow players to participate in an imaginary world to the fullest extent of their desires and abilities. Roleplaying is encouraged, but not required. After all, how are we, the game's administrators, supposed to know if you are playing a character, or acting like your own true self? On the other hand, gamewide events, worshipping, fearing the Ravers... all of this is programmed into the code, and helps facilitate roleplay.

It is hoped that all personality types have been accommodated, at least to some degree, but it must be mentioned that New Draconia, the Sidalician Empire and all the states and towns of the races encourage lawfulness and civility. Minor social deviance is fine, major social deviance will probably be dealt with harshly. On a realistic note, this means read the Rules and the help files.

The basic 'goal' of the game it to have fun! There are quests of all kinds available, things to explore, puzzles to solve, wonders to be found. An always developing set of skills and spells is available to learn. 'Experience' is garnered by quests, solving puzzles, pleasing your god, and adventuring and combat. Learning new things will take some of your experience.

Adventuring alone or in groups is possible. When the adventurer gets a certain amount of knowledge and experience they may befriend an animal, which will henceforth be their faithful companion while in Sidalicia. Your pet will communicate with you about spells. When you are high enough level it can contribute its mana to yours. It will fight for you, and if you acquire the right skills, you can 'possess' it and travel through the world in its form. It's bad form to kill your animalfriend, and it will hurt YOU when it dies. Keep this in mind when ordering your 'pet' to do things. If, for some reason, you have no further need of your pet, or which to acquire another such friend, release the one you have now, in order to escape any possible penalties.

The religious system on Sidalicia is highly developed. Sidalician Gods, all of them onetime Dragon Gods, are active in the players lives. When you have enough experience you may choose one of them to worship. In return for your worship the God will assist you in various aspects of your life. Those that favor killing can help with that, those that like knowledge or learning will help in those areas. Some assist in casting, or heighten the affects of a spell, others help with healing, fighting, traveling. At certain times, you might receive a special visit from a God, in which he/she will give you a token. Collect enough of these tokens and you will be able to use them to obtain especial holy favors, such as enhancement of basic stats.

Weather and nature are also highly developed systems on Sidalicia. Weather counts, if you are in a blizzard and not properly clothed, you will freeze. If you are in the desert you might suffer from heatstroke. Random weather events, always related to what is happening in the 'skies' of the mud can startle and surprise you. Windstorms will be so strong you are knocked into another room, hail can make hail balls, hard rain will make puddles. During a thunderstorm lighting might strike, and it might strike YOU. Icy conditions happen. Eventually there will be zones susceptible to floods, hurricanes, tidal waves... volcanic eruptions. The code exists, the building of the zones is underway.

Combat

This could be you! Sidalicia is a combative world. It is certainly possible to spend one's time killing everything in sight. However that might not be completely wise for some of your victims could possibly be of help to you. That being said, currently there are several different basic weapon types in use in the world. You need to practice each one that you wish to learn in order to be proficient in it. It is perfectly possible to fight without learning any weapon, but weapons bring that extra 'cutting edge' and provide a satisfactory amount of blood that can't always be obtained with fists and elbows.

Longswords and Staves require two hands to wield, but provide for a bit of extra damage. Only Daggers can be used to backstab, but they do overall less damage per hit than other weapons(barring the original backstab, when they do substantially more). Higher weapons skills include fancy things like throwing weapons, spears, axes and shooting weapons. To learn these skills you will need to know the skills that proceed it, in other words those which it is dependent on. See the spells and skills page below for more information on this.

Your opponents are not all dumb beings meant for slaughter. As a matter of fact, even animals on Sidalicia are considered basic intelligent, strong, resourceful beings. The world is imbued with magic, and so are its animal species. Sidalician inhabitants will hunt you, track you, remember you, and maybe do awful things to you. Some might also help you, assuming you haven't murdered them first. It is hoped that as the MUD develops it will become possible to adventure and level without killing much of anything except during quests. Therefore killing will be a choice, not a requirement.

Levels of Play

There are 100 mortal levels on Sidalicia and 6 immortal levels. Leveling is not particularly difficult, although it will require some work and thought. As you level you will quickly leave your old haunts behind, and move forward into the world. It is simply impossible to level by killing the same old thing over and over again. It should be apparent from this that Sidalicia is not a 'easy' MUD, or the standard hack and slash, although it can easily function as a hack and slash. One the other hand, it is not meant to be impossible either, and leveling and the speed at which this is accomplished will be a personal choice.

It is not possible to become an immortal on Sidalicia by leveling. Immortality is by invitation only, and meant for people who wish to contribute more to the game than playing it. The point of the game is instead to explore and enjoy a new world and the people you meet in it. Included in this is a process of learning and adventuring which should be fairly pleasant.
